Graciela Fernández and Danilo Salerno were received by officials from FAO Americas, an organization that has been a strategic ally of the ICA regional office and whose relationship is now strengthened within the framework of the development program financed by the European Union.
With an agenda already focused on the promotion of International Year of Cooperatives and crossed by the project coops4dev -financed by the EU- the President and the Regional Director of Cooperatives of the Americas met with representatives of the FAO office for Latin America and the Caribbean.
The meeting took place on June 14 in Santiago, Chile, where Graciela Fernández and Danilo Salerno also visited the headquarters of ECLAC. This meeting consolidates strategic ties with these organizations and reinforces the influence of the American cooperative sector in virtue of the renewed support program with the EU.
In this case, under the impulse of the regional representative and deputy director general of FAO, Mario Lubetkin, the meeting was with Maya Takagi, senior officer and regional program leader; Luiz Beduschi, Senior Policy Officer in Rural Development; and Pablo Rabczuk, chief of staff of the Regional Representative.
During the meeting, the positive results of the implementation of this alliance in the last four years were reviewed and the contents and priorities that will define the strategy of the agreement that will be renewed in the coming months were delved into.
These points are part of the new Strategic Plan and the EU Project that is beginning to be executed by Cooperatives of the Americas together with the other Regions and offices of the International Cooperative Alliance.
Among other points, there was talk of implementing training courses for public decision-makers and cooperative leaders that promote receptivity to the Model Law that FAO and Parlatino have developed throughout 2023; and develop research and information sharing on agricultural cooperatives in the region with possible emphasis on integration and technological innovation, thanks to the Redacoop project with ICAO.
Commitments were also mentioned to help implement the results of the next United Nations Future Summit as well as the next phase of the Decade of Family Farming; to deepen knowledge and promote integration between production and consumption, giving new visibility and relevance to the agreement between Cooperativa Obrera/FACC Argentina and FUCC Uruguay, regionalizing the platform in triangulation with Brazil.
Finally, it was proposed to hold an event with ECLAC in 2025, the International Year of Cooperatives; and jointly design projects to be financed by donors and development agencies.
