The new edition of World Cooperative Monitor 2025 This confirms a significant advance for cooperatives in the Americas within the global ranking of the 300 largest organizations in the sector. According to data released this year by the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) and the European Research Institute on Cooperative and Social Enterprises (EURICASE), the region reached 103 entities in the list, surpassing the 94 organizations registered in the previous edition.
This growth reflects the continent's increased participation in the global cooperative landscape and consolidates the economic weight of American cooperatives in key sectors such as agriculture, finance, insurance, and commerce. The Monitor is the only international report that systematically surveys the world's largest cooperatives and mutuals, analyzing their turnover and their economic and social impact.
In the executive summary of the previous edition, corresponding to the 2023 Monitor, the Americas concentrated 94 organizations within the Top 300with a strong presence from the United States, Brazil, Canada and Argentina, among other countries.
The jump to 103 entities in the new edition shows a positive trend for the region, which is expanding its participation in the ranking and gaining ground in the global cooperative economy. In this new edition, that representation comprises 73 organizations from the United States, 13 from Brazil, 8 from Canada, and 3 from Argentina.
In terms of sector leadership, organizations from the continent maintain prominent positions in the Monitor's main categories. Among the cooperatives with the highest turnover worldwide are the US insurer State Farm and the French financial group Crédit Agricole, along with the German retail group REWE, demonstrating the strong presence of insurance and financial services entities at the top of the global ranking.
The report also notes that the sectors with the greatest weight within the Top 300 are agriculture and food, which concentrate 35,7% of the total business volume, and insurance, with 31,7%, areas where cooperatives from the Americas have a particularly relevant participation, especially in the United States and Brazil.
The 2025 edition of the Monitor, presented within the framework of the International Year of Cooperatives proclaimed by the United Nations, also offers a special look at the sector's contribution to major global challenges, reaffirming the role of cooperativism as a key player in building more inclusive, resilient and people-centered economies.
With this growth in regional participation, the report confirms the dynamism of the cooperative movement in the Americas and its growing impact on the international economic scene.
