Cooperative solidarity in action: Let's support together the Emberá Drúa Cooperative project, Panama

We want to move from photos and words to action: Cooperatives of the Americas invites the cooperative movement and its allied organizations to join the campaign to support the community project being developed by Tranchichi Emberá Drúa Multi-Service Cooperative, indigenous organization located in the Emberá Drúa community, in the Chagres National Park, Republic of Panama.

A few weeks ago we visited this community and learned firsthand about its capacity to generate development in its territory, in the lead-up to our last regional meeting of the International Year of Cooperatives.

Likewise, in both Paraguay and Panama, we have listened to and accompanied Andrea Lino Machi, president of the indigenous cooperative, who has conveyed to us not only words, but the living example of a cooperative movement that builds and generates change.

The cooperative Tranchichi Emberá Drúa, promoted by the Panamanian Autonomous Cooperative Institute (IPACOOP), It reflects the institutional commitment to indigenous community care, the preservation of the territory, knowledge, and local development in Panama.

This community has inhabited the Panama Canal Watershed for generations and is recognized for its historical role in protecting forests, preserving cultural heritage, and promoting community ecotourism.

A project and an opportunity to support

Currently, the cooperative continues to promote key projects and actions in its community, especially by receiving visits from sustainable tourism, which contributes to generating small incomes and spreading the message of the strength of cooperativism as a natural model of community development.

Today, with all its leaders and the voice of its president, Andrea Lino Machi, it is investing to improve its facilities and reception capabilities, which indirectly also means:

  • Achieving energy autonomy (installation of solar panels with the cooperative) CoopehGas),
  • improve the midweek attendance of teachers who arrive to guarantee primary education to boys and girls in their community school,
  • caring for and natural resources (traditional tambo, trails and access, water transport means, essential for community mobility, emergencies and tourist activities.

This will benefit, specifically and directly, 140 people in the community and positively impact other communities in Chagres National Park and contribute to the growth and strengthening of the area.

Let's join this solidarity project!

In order to contribute to this project, Cooperatives of the Americas seeks to bring together 10.000 USD to generate a seed fund that reflects our movement's commitment to indigenous communities and to cooperative action in the territories where we work.
