Cooperatives UK – Cooperatives of the Americas


Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the tourism sector was forced to close for a couple of
years. These situations had a negative impact on the tourism cooperative members, their
respective families and communities, as throughout the world.


This project aims to: Strengthen the cooperative model and its culture through
development of capacities of women and youth, cooperative business development, solutions
marketing and communication cooperatives, resilience to climate change for the protection of the
environment.


Beneficiaries are existing cooperatives + pre-cooperatives (informal groups with
need for support to establish a cooperative):


For the election of the participants, four basic requirements were considered:


a) That they are cooperatives or are in the process of establishing themselves as cooperatives
b) That they are part of the Union of Adventure Ecotourism Cooperatives in Chiapas (in
later “La Unión”) – as part of the follow-up to the recommendations of the
consultancies carried out with the DGRV Germany
c) That it can be linked to a short-term marketing project
d) That they are connected by road at a distance of no more than 3 hours from
San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas.


The cooperatives and informal groups direct beneficiaries of this project are:

  1. Kahpeltik Cañada (Cooperative of coffee producers, already a member of “La Unión”)
  2. Cañón del Jabalí (Ecotourism Cooperative and a member of “La Unión”)
  3. Cascadas del Chiflón (Ecotourism Cooperative and member of “La Unión”)
  4. Ciudad de las Rocas (Ecotourism Cooperative in a regime of association to "La Unión")
  5. February 5 (pre cooperative)
  6. La Mercadita, (grassroots organization, food producer (80% women, XNUMX% men
    20%) establishing a consumer cooperative
