About the 6th Cooperative Summit of the Americas
The cooperative commitment to the recovering and the concern for our local and global community
From October 24 to 27, 2022, we will have a great opportunity to highlight the impact and commitment of American cooperative movement for the global agenda, the planet, the sustainable development.
Cooperatives of the Americas and all member organizations from Paraguay (CONPACOOP, CONCOPAR, Cooperativa Universitaria, FECOAC, FECOPAR, FECOMULP and Panal Seguros) organizes the 6th Cooperative Summit of the Americas, which will take place in the city of Luque, Asunción, either on an in-person or hybrid modality depending on the pandemic developments, in compliance with the national and international health protocols.
The regional Summits have been held since 2009 with the purpose of building agreements and political commitments that are reflected in a Final Declaration, aimed at promoting changes that impact cooperative organizations and their communities. The expected number of participants is 1,200 people, who will meet over the course of three days to debate, study and magnify the most current issues, determining advocacy strategies and actions for the following 4 years.
This 6th edition constitutes an effort by regional cooperative movement to analyze reality, debate proposals and define joint initiatives for cooperatives as key actors of the international community.
The key themes to be discussed and analyzed in this first in-person gathering after over two years of pandemic will be: the cooperative identity, economic reactivation and integration, climate change and sustainability.
Side events of the core agenda will include a Commercial Forum, a Cooperative Education Forum, a Youth Meeting and the 8th Continental Congress of Cooperative Law.
On the Paraguayan cooperative movement
The Paraguayan cooperative movement has archived important results at national and international level, demonstrating that our model is the way to build a healthier and fairer society. The social, educational and union actions of the solidarity sector have a great impact in Paraguay as well as in other countries, (There are two Confederations in addition to several organizations involved in the organization of the Summit and they appear to use the term cooperative movement to include everyone).
The Paraguayan cooperative movement has been the protagonist of the national economic development: in 2021 there were more than 750 cooperatives representing 2,000,000 members and representing 45% of the economically active population.
In the national finance system, cooperative banking have a share of 18.2% of assets, 17.1% of conceived loans and 13.4% of savings.
In the agribusiness sector, cooperatives play a prominent role since they contribute to the generation of 22% of grain production, 21% of local beef production and 22% of exports. It is estimated that 68% of raw milk production that supplies the country comes from the cooperative sector, while 43% is exported to various countries.
A meeting aimed at cooperative leaders, researchers, teachers, directors and cooperative officials. The topics to be discussed and other logistical details of this important activity will be announced shortly, so that those interested can organize their participation well in advance and prepare the papers to be presented.

Continental Congress of Cooperative Law

From the 27th to the 29th of October 2022, a new edition of the Continental Congress of Cooperative Law will be held in Asunción, capital of Paraguay, under the motto The cooperative law and the cooperative identity in the post-pandemic era.
The inauguration will take place on October 27 at the Centro de Convenciones del Bourbon Hotel Conmebol, organized in the framework of the 6th Cooperative Summit of the Americas, which will be held just prior (October 25-27).
The rest of the work, on October 28 and 29, will be carried out in the Quinta Ykuá Satí and conducted through plenary presentations by qualified international specialists and parallel thematic commissions where the papers presented by the participants on the different points included in the agenda will be discussed.
The Congress, in its eighth edition, will be held during the same week as the 6th Cooperative Summit of the Americas, which will take place in the Paraguayan capital. The last Congress took place in San José, Costa Rica in November 2019 and was attended by over two hundred participants from nineteen countries.
As in previous occasions, the most important issues currently of interest to Cooperative Law will be discussed, especially in light of the situation created by the pandemic, including the changes and challenges caused by it as well as its effects on cooperatives in the region.
The meeting is aimed at legal professionals, researchers, professors, magistrates, leaders and officials of cooperatives related to the subject. For its realization, it has the support of universities, professional associations, cooperative entities and official organizations related to them.
The 8th Continental Congress of Cooperative Law will be held in the Quinta Ykua Satí, located in the city of Asuncion. Registered participants to the Continental Congress will have a free transfer service from the suggested list of conventioned hotels, during the course of the activities
